Twice a week, you can find me in the Darebin community as a social worker. There are a lot of isolated people – many of the alcohol or drug-affected – who are living on their own with no help and feel vulnerable. The job pays the bills, but what really gets me out of bed daily is photography.

I was the stills photographer for a Melbourne-made short film ‘Silence’, which won a BAFTA for Best Drama – Short Film, Montreal Jury Best Drama award along with many other awards worldwide in 2016.

I am of Filipino descent and was born in Melbourne but spent the first few years of my life in Penang, Malaysia. My earliest childhood memories were the cultural and food diversity in Penang, and I would walk everywhere with a camera.

I remember I had one last film in the camera reel, before Mum or Dad would develop it. Feeling a little like Alice in Wonderland, I went into the overgrown garden and took a photo of a pumpkin.

The picture of the pumpkin didn’t turn out as I saw it in my mind, but triggered a curiosity within me to keep taking photos.

I have always lived in the fringes of the Inner West, and now call Seddon home. Yarraville and Seddon remind me a lot of Penang, with different people and cultures living harmoniously together.

Money is important, yes but there needs to be a separate motivation in life. My goal in 2017 is to be more involved in the local community by supporting the businesses and getting more Inner West exposure and content out there through photography.
